Tips and Tune-ups at First Ever Comox Valley Car Free Sunday

The World Community Bikes folks encourage you to give your bicycle a treat on Sunday`s car free day in downtown Courtenay.

Look for the booth, located outside Zocalo Café, where for a small donation, volunteer bike mechanics will provide a quick tune up or some technical tips.

`Tips and Tune-ups for a Donation` will be available from 1:00 to 5:00 through the afternoon.

And while your bike is being looked after, you can treat yourself to some of World Community`s fair trade products. Organic, ethically traded coffee, tea, chocolate and other products will be available at market prices.

Since May 2009, World Community Bikes has partnered with Comox Valley social agencies to provide bicycles to adults who cannot afford other means of transport.

Donations of bikes or your skills as a volunteer mechanic are always welcome.

bikes arrive safely down south

We have just received photos of the box of bikes donated by the good people of the Comox Valley arriving and being put to good use in Nicaragua.

If you have a bike in good working order that you are no longer using, please get in touch as it will make a huge difference in the daily life of folks right here in the valley.

Soon the container will be picked up to begin its journey from the Comox Valley, BC to somewhere even more glamorous, but first the familiar YM Line had to be painted over...

locals

We've been fixing up bikes for some more local folks, the most recent recipents being The Comox Valley Transition Society and Canada World Youth

Friday, September 26, 2008

it's all in the details

Today we began unpacking the container....to ensure the recipients don't get taxed when the bikes arrive, we have to list everything that's in there

So, everything has to come out and be counted

Tomorrow it's all going back in again...

cycledelic success!

What a fantastic night, thanks to all the music makers and to Sperlin and Maya for organising such a great event at the Native Sons.

A big thank you to all the generous folks who came out and raised $1000 to get that box of bikes one big step closer to being sent to the needy of Nicaragua!

CYCLEDELIC

Celebrate Bike to Work Week, have some fun, and support a worthwhile cause. World Community Bikes will be hosting, Cycledelic, a fast-peddling evening of dance and entertainment on Saturday, June 7th at the Lower Native Sons’ Hall.

Artists will include acoustic guitarist Amber McAlonan and her original alternative folk style, and the newly-formed three piece band Booty and the Hofish, whose style can be described as a fusion of bluegrass and hip hop.

The dance portion of the evening, featuring DJs of varying styles, will begin with local DJ Upsidedowninja and his down tempo, jazzy style of spinning. Next up will be Scotty Soulshock’s hip hop scratch and Glenn Wildes’ mix of styles. Adil Amlani, originally from Montreal, will perform urban house mixes to round out the night.

Tickets are $10.00 each, with a limited number at $5.00 for low-income or students and will be available at the Freakin’ Coffeeshop on Rosewall Crescent or at the door.

There will be door prizes, food and a no-host bar. Doors open at 8:00 pm.

Profits from the evening will help send a container of bicycles collected by World Community Bikes to Nicaragua.

The group would like to thank the entertainers, who are all local, for volunteering their time and talent.

FMI call Sperlin at 338-0229.
